So interesting but so awful. The workers lives meant nothing to the Europeans. Becoming rich on the labor of indigenous people is still the name of the game. I visited Tikal in 1997 and was overwhelmed by the richness of the ruling class and culture. They also used slaves to maintain their riches. It seems mankind always reverts to slavery.
Fascinating history. The disturbing takeaway: greedy people with power who exploit and harm others have always existed; little has changed. Religion is part of the exploitation.
Interesting history and cool illustrations. Thank you!
Historical context is important here. Indigenous laborers were required to work in Potosí's silver mines through the Spanish mita system of forced labor, based on an analogous mit'a system traditional to pre-Hispanic Andean society. The Inca Empire, and the Andean civilizations which preceeded them, engaged in equally, if not more, barbaric (by today's standards), including human sacrifice.

Sometimes it's hard to wrap our heads around the cruelty of the past, but sometimes we realize the present is not as different as we may hope...
Fabulous story full of cruelty and adventure.
Thanks!

Yes, that's definitely true.
