George, I wrote to you when you published your last piece on women and bicycles. My grand mother dissuaded my mom against a bike by offering a dog instead. My grandmother was born in 1884 so likely was influenced to see the bicycle as treacherous but also outside of moral bounds for girls. It makes more sense now having read your piece today. Mary Ellen

Yes, maybe she thought of the bike as an unacceptably liberating machine. Better to get a dog!
Interesting as always, but I also really like all the illustrations, some of the Art Nouveau posters are exquisite!
